At the end of the 1800s, a large number of people still held strongly to English traditions. There was fear of losing those ties with "Mother England".
Another concern, particularly for Western Australia, was that the state would not gain any of the trade benefits available to the eastern states, being so far away. Western Australia initially did not wish to federate because the state was guided by Premier and former explorer John Forrest, who held back on the agreement because he wanted to ensure the economic security of the state, given its distance from the more highly populated eastern states. Forrest believed that Western Australia's very distance from the rest of Australia's states would mean it would miss out on many of the trade benefits the eastern states would enjoy. Western Australia itself was divided over whether or not it should federate, as the people of Albany wanted to be included as part of South Australia, rather than aligning themselves with Perth and Fremantle.
Sir Henry Parkes was a staunch supporter of the Federation of Australia. As a politician, he is perhaps best remembered for his famous Tenterfield Oration, delivered on 24 October 1889, at the Tenterfield School of Arts. In this speech, he advocated the Federation of the six Australian colonies. The man who became Australia's first Prime Minister, Edmund Barton, was a strong advocate of the federation of the Australian colonies, and he led the federal movement following the death of Sir Henry Parkes. In 1897 he was one of the NSW delegates to the Constitutional Convention which developed a constitution for the proposed federation. Patriotism was also reinforced through the work of writers such as Henry Lawson and, in particular, Banjo Paterson. On 22 January 1899, leaders of the six Australian colonies met in Melbourne to discuss the federation bill.

Saying the people in the US have a "common American heritage" is a broad brush way of saying that they have a very large history and culture in common. When looked at closely, some people will agree with this and some will disagree.
YES! Many people disagreed with slavery. One group is the slaves themselves. Another is a group of people that formed the underground railroad which I highly suggest you look into if you are interested in this subject.
Because some people do not disagree to slavery and some people don't. S o every one has their own opinion.
