Some people did not like immigrants in the 1800's by the same reasons as some people did not and do not like immigrants in 1900's, 2000's and... to be continued... The most common reasons are: 1. Different newcommers' menthality, phsychology and behavior these are different to happened local ones and these or should be resisted, or partially accepted, or some local mentioned qualities should be changed under newcommers's influence and reasons - which is paintful and not appreciated process. 2. Newcommers' fresh and aggressive activities, ideas and visions of how the life process should be organized and performed, which, in its line, makes local ones to get following feelings: to share a place, to share jobs, to get under the management of newcommers' fresh and aggressive entreprenuer success or loose in a competition - which automatically put "veterans" in a second-sort level. 3. The fear that local ones' tax money are going to be used not for their wealth, comfortable and convinient life development but for the support and making richer of newcommers' life who did not so far esteblish something helpful for a community and no one knows will they do.
Theres always been an anti-immigrant movement (or feeling) in the US. During the Revolutionary War in 1775, men NOT born in America (but born elsewhere, England, France, etc) were discriminated against. Men not born in Britain, but born in America, were discriminated against when they were part of the British Army stationed in the American colonies.
During the 1840's, the Irish were discriminated against; the American Indian was discriminated against, the Italians were discriminated against during the 1890's. The former SOUTH Vietnamese were discriminated against during the 1970's. The Russian immigrants were being discriminated against during the 1990's.
Might just be human nature.

Some German immigrants came to America in the 1800's to escape persecution by the German government. Some faced harsh rule. In addition, they were looking for land and economic opportunities.
The Russian immigrants settled in new york with no money, no English, no place to live here. "Help me please! See my passport. Give me one rule then heal me or I will put money on your face,"some of them said.
There are no unrestricted immigrants. Even in the 1800’s immigrants went through Ellis Island for processing.

Yes, they do! Where they come from, their lifestyles are more, well, dirty! So when they come to our country they think they can preserve their dirty ways.
When people came into the United States in the 1800-1900’s they entered through Ellis Island. They had to be interviewed, examined, and stood in long lines before entering. If they were ill with something like TB they weren’t allowed into the country.

More than half of the people in most big Americans cities were immigrants or children of immigrants.
Immigrants were not treated very well at all in the early part of the twentieth century. There was a lot of discrimination against people from other countries, and there were even some laws on the books that explicitly discriminated against immigrants from Asian countries.
Chinese immigrants came to America and helped build the transcontinental railroad. it was very dangerous work but Chinese immigrants were plentiful and willing. they were cheap, plentiful labor which made them ideal to the racist white men of America.
Brazilian People, tourists and immigrants (not illegal, some may be though).
