When the Spaniards had been invited into Tenochtitlan when they first arrived, the Aztecs had caught the disease off them and this finally caused their downfall. As around 80 % of the population where killed by small pox. This is probably one of the major reasons of the empire's downfall. One Aztec city which was burnt down was rebuilt and called Mexico City.
