Afro-Caribbean people in the UK are predominately from the islands of Jamaica, Trinidad, Barbados, St Lucia and Antigua. These lands were all part of the British empire prior to gaining independence in the 1960s and 1970s. In the aftermath of WW2 Britain was short of manpower to rebuild the country, at the same time there was mass unemployment in the West Indies. During the 1950s government officials went to the Caribbean to recruit nurses, bus drivers, train drivers etc. They were encouraged to emigrate to the 'mother country' where 'the streets were paved with gold'. This was the start of the mass migration of Caribbean people to the UK. At that time the people of the British West Indies were all British subjects with British Passports. Mass migration ended in the early sixties with the passing of UK Immigration laws.
My father came to the UK from Jamaica in 1954.
