The Boston Port Act or the Trade Act of 1774 was one of the intolerable acts that led to the War of Independence. In retaliation for the Boston Tea Party, King George ordered Boston Port closed and barriers were constructed around it. This was to continue until the colonies paid restitution to the King for revenues lost.
The colonists had dumped nearly $1 million (in today's money) worth of tea into the Boston Harbor during the Boston Tea Party, December 16, 1773. The British, understandably, were upset. They wanted the colonists to pay for the tea. The colonists, in turn, felt it was one of the Intolerable Acts, the Punitive Acts or the Coercive Acts, so the colonists, understandably, were upset and refused. It was like a mother telling a child to clean up their room and pay to have the carpets cleaned--the colonists did not want to be Britain's "child", controlled and dominated by a country that did not understood the colonists' needs or desires. The "children" (colonists) did not want to be taxed for everything they did on their own (like what they made and wanted to sell back in Britain), or everything they needed from "Mother Britain".
They closed it as a punishment for the Boston tea party.
