The wars are two different times and places. Actually both side did use battle formats and tactics that had been used for centuries. They would line up one on each side of a field facing each other, but the problem with this is the weapon technology was better in 1861 than in 1776. Remington had invented the repeater rifle so the result of the battles was more death and wounded. Some civil war battles were so bad that rivers ran red and the bodies were so thick that the ground couldn't be seen. In the civil war the first use of a sub with a torpedo was designed, air warfare was begun with hot air balloons, barb wire developed, flame throwers, grenades, field hospitals, and many other things. None of these existed in 1776 and the use of old battle methods in 1861 resulted in casualties of men on both sides.
The Confederacy could not use the American Revolutionary War as a model for their war of independence for several reasons. One reason was that the Revolution took eight years to accomplish and by any balanced view of the South's situation they simply did not have the time for a long war. Also, the British base of supplies in terms of weaponry was an ocean away. The food supply situation could have been relieved by using the West Indies or even Canada. However, weapons were a key factor that required a manufacturing base. Also, the American revolutionaries had the support of France, the Netherlands, and Spain. French troops and their navy for example, sealed the fate of Britain at Yorktown.
The enemies of the Confederacy were right "next door" and the North had a strong economic incentive to keep its supplies of cotton and tobacco within its borders. This ignores the so-called "Unionism" idea which while genuine, was backed up by the North's commercial interests.
Britain was 3,000 miles away and could afford to lose the American colonies. If that were not so, than much more would have been invested to end the American rebellion.
It is not hard to imagine that over the long Revolutionary War, thousands of Redcoats could safely be garrisoned in Canada and have become an overwhelming invading force to take total control of Boston, New York and Philadelphia.
Also, the over powering industrial might of the North, the huge size of potential armies and the safety of all types of supplies were unreachable by the Southern military.
And as it was seen, the agriculture base of the South, its plantation system, was too easily disrupted by Northern armies.
