* All the main extermination (death) camps were located in Poland. It was an area that the Allies couldn't reach easily; the country had a traditionally antisemitic population, 3.3 million Jewish residents and also a good rail network. * Since November 1939 the Nazis had forced most of the Jewish population of Poland into ghettos (sealed off Jewish districts). Except perhaps in the Lodz Ghetto, the Jews were deprived of the means to earn their livelihood and were seen as a burden, despite the fact that the rations allowed them were grossly inadequate. * Nazi administrators in Poland complained bitterly that the place was being used as a 'dumping ground' and requested a 25% reduction in the population.
