On May 10, 1857, it started out as a mutanty of seypoys againt the British East India Company's Army. Other citizens began to rebell as well, which was threatning to the Company's power. As a result in 1858, India was governed by the crown and known as the British Raj.

The revolt in 1857 was also known as the Sepoy Mutiny in India. It was caused because of the growing displeasure of the Indian soldiers working for the British East India Company. What sparked the revolt was that the British East India company gave the soldiers cartridges greased with cow and pig fat, which is against Hindu and Muslim religious ideology. This caused a revolt from the Sepoys, which caused the British Empire to take India from the BEI company.
Initially it was successfull because of the surprise element involved with the attack, but in the end, it was an Unsuccessful revolt against British Rule. One thing 1857 did was induce revolutionary thoughts in the minds of the people which served as the seed for independence 90 years later
