They came to Singapore mostly to trade and to make a better living, as Singapore had better job opportunities then. For example, at that time, India was war-stricken and there was a lack of jobs or means to earn money. This is why there was a sudden influx of Indians, especially from the South. Most of them became sepoys (policemen) or guards.

Also, in China, there was not much arable land and there were too many farmers. Thus, most of these farmers were thrown into poverty, not being able to even feed their own families with their harvest. They came to Singapore to attempt to escape this poverty and to get better jobs. Also, coolie agents were sent from Singapore to villages in South China to call for people to work as coolies in Singapore. They were promised that these jobs would remove them from poverty. Also, a lot of Chinese traders were attracted to Singapore because of the high potential they saw in it.

Malay immigrants came to Singapore from various places: the Malay Archipelago, Indonesia and some from Brunei. The Malays, not unlike the other race groups, also wanted to find better jobs in Singapore. The mostly worked as hawkers or technicians, especially on ships.

Pull Factors

Free immigration policy with no restriction. Immigrants came in large numbers as the British allowed them to come and go as the pleased.

Another reason why immigrants came was due to the success of Singapore as a port. Traders were attracted to Singapore due to the free port status, which meant free trade for the immigrants.

Thirdly, Singapore had jobs and business opportunities. The new settlement offered good economic opportunities by creating new jobs and immigrants could better support their families.

Push Factors (Just in case you need them)

Natural Disasters. Droughts in India and China often caused famines. Natural Disasters affected agriculture which led to poverty and shortage of food.

Outbreak of war/conflict. Arabs in the Middle East left their homelands to escape civil war which resulted in disorder and insecurity. Immigrants came to Singapore to seek protection and safety from the disorder at home.

Lack of Job opportunities. Jobs in over-populated countries like India offered meagre wages. Immigrants came to Singapore to find better work opportunities to support their family back at home.

Malays are the first settler in Singapore. Before European Powers came to the Malay Archipelago, there are several kingdoms/sultanates that already existed.

Malays from Indonesia came to Temasek(later known as Singapura after Sang Nila Utama saw a lion on the island upon arriving for a hunt)to seek refuge from the on going war between the kingdoms and to establish a new kingdom on that island. When Sang Nila Utama arrived, he established a Singapura Kingdom

Today most entrepreneurs choose Singapore as their preferred jurisdiction for business setup and expansion for three primary reasons:

  1. Ease of doing business in Singapore;
  2. Singapore taxes; and
  3. Quality of life in Singapore.

Here is quick look as the three factors:

Ease of doing business in Singapore

Singapore is ranked #1 on the 'World's Easiest Place toDo Business' list in the World Bank's Doing Business Report, 2010. Singapore company incorporation can be completed in a day's time with minimal formalities. There is no red-tape or bureaucracy involved. Singapore's Immigration policy is open and liberal facilitating relocation of foreign company owners and foreign professional staff. Talented human resource capital is readily available. Business infrastructure is world-class.

Singapore taxes

Singapore's tax system is highly attractive owing to its low tax rates and tax incentives. There is no dividend tax, no capital gains tax, and no estate duty. Start-ups can benefit from tax exemptions. Companies can benefit from industry-specific tax incentives and an extensive tax treaty network. Furthermore, Singapore follows a territorial system of taxation and implements a single-tier tax system.

Quality of life

Quality of life in Singapore is comparable to Western nations. The country is safe, environment friendly and cosmopolitan. Healthcare, education and housing are excellent. English is widely spoken and most expats find it easy to relocate to Singapore and settle down quite easily.
