The majority of them were US citizens, and while they felt they had been wronged by their government, they were still patriotic and loyal to their homeland. Mormons have strong beliefs about America as a promised land and God having a hand in it's foundation. Although they may be in disagreement with members of the government that is currently in place, they are loyal to the country and believe it is their duty to defend and protect it.
