The Pax Romana is the period of time ushered in by Augustus Caesar beginning in 27 BC. to 180 AD. It was called the "Roman Peace" as Rome's expansionist foreign policies were halted to a large degree. The Pax Romana, in comparison to other periods in ancient Rome were marked by cultural achievements, general prosperity and internal strife were markedly decreased. The Pax Romana ended because the Roman state had ceased to grow. Boundaries had been set for the Empire, and for the first time the army had become a drain on the economy of Rome. Till this point the army provided new slaves and riches from conqured countries. Only about 4% of Romans were middle class and the wealthy raised the taxes on the lower classes to bolster their own living standards, which lead to rebellion. After the death of Marcus Aurelius [the last great Roman Emperor] came a succession of poor leaders, and so began not only the end of the Pax Romana but the fall of the Roman Empire.

Pax Romana is a term for a 200-year period of relative political stability in the Roman Empire. Some authorities put its end in 180, when Marcus Aurelius died and some set it in 192, when Commodus was murdered. Marcus Aurelius He was succeeded by his son Commodus, who was self-centred, and cruel and ruled through fear. His reign contributed to undermine the legitimacy and strength of central authority. He was murdered and the year of the five emperor, in which there were five claimants to the imperial title and three years of civil war, followed. Pertinax was murdered after three months. Didus Julianus succeed by bribing the imperial guard. Septimius Severus, the governor of Pannonia, declared himself. Less than two months later Didus Julianus was murdered. Septimius Severis was challenged by Pescennius Niger, the Governor of Syria. A civil war (193-94) in which Niger was defeated three times ensued. Severus was then challenged by Clodius Albinus, the governor of Britannia, who had previously supported him. In 196 Niger declared himself emperor. There was another civil war and Niger was defeated in 197. Severus established an autocratic regime based in the support of the army, rather than the senate or the people. After his death his sons Caracalla and Geta became co-emperors. Caracalla murdered Geta and was murdered just over five years later. The reign of the next emperor, Macrinus, lasted only 14 months. He faced a rebellion of the army because he refused to give the army payments called donations and was defeated in battle and deposed. The Emperor Elagabalus was 15 when he succeeded and the empire was effectively run by is grandmother and mother (Julia Maesa and Julia Soamias). He was murdered, along with his mother, after a reign of less than four years. Alexander Severus was 16 when he succeeded, ruled under the influence of his mother (Julia Avita Mamaea) and was murdered after 13 years in a mutiny by a legion stationed in Germania. This was followed by the Crisis of the Third Century, a fifty-year period of military anarchy and civil war.
