The Phoenicians were successful, because since the lebanese mountains were a natural barrier, they looked to the sea to expand. The Phoenicians founded colonies on several islands, because those are easiest to protect. Also, the colonies proved useful to stock goods, and to escape to in time of war. The Phoenicians are believed to have invented the bireme, and the trireme, which means two sets of oars, and three sets of oars. Because their ships were vulnerable to storm, they sailed in March-October when it was hottest. SOme say that the Phoenicians sailed as far as ENgland in search of tin, but I think that that's unlikely. It is recored however, that Spain was a major trading partner.

I hope this helps (:

We are often told that the Phoenicians invented the alphabet. Regardless of who put pen to papyrus to create it, the Phoenician contribution was none-the-less major and critical. They were the major sea-traders of the Mediterranean, and they went everywhere. When the Phoenicians began using the alphabet as a simple and easy way to keep track of their trades, it was exposed to everyone. Also they show the other countries that ships could travel around the globe trading important commodities. Phoenician mariners sailed to Mediterranean and southwestern European ports. The Phoenicians were the great merchants of ancient times. They sold rich treasures from many lands.
