Slavery was the mainstay of the cotton industry - half of all the exports of the USA. Less available labor would mean giving up agricultural dominance, and the South was widely inferior in all other economic areas.
The farmers decided against abolishing slavery because they would have no one to work in the fields to harvest the crops and it was unheard of for them to do it themselves. In a nut shell they would lose money!
