Germany sank seven U.S. merchant ships.

Although most Americans supported neutrality when the war broke out, general opinion was in favour of the UK (which was furthered by Propaganda). German atrocities in Belgium, the sinking of the Lusitania, killing 120 Americans and Germany's decision to attack all American ships in the North Atlantic were the main reasons why America joined WWI.
