First of all, because the US simply isn't a major European country. All on its own, it has become the major world power. Is has however become part of the US/European 'power' alliance called NATO, where it traditionally (and because it is the major military force) provides the organization's commanding General.

Between the years of 1890 to 1914, the US stayed away from making alliances with any of the great European powers. The division of powers in the US between the presidency and the Congress made an active alliance policy virtually impossible. The entire US, people and government were not in favor of abandoning its comfortable position of isolation. The US was content to have achieved dominance in the Western Hemisphere. It also was content to have a small army.
