The 'Cold War' was precisely that. Russan tanks on the streets, repeated in Prague 12 years later, 1968, was not what the world wanted to see. The advent of atomic power in those days was fresh in the mind. The idea of the USA & the USSR fighting each other was not, is not, good to contemplate.

During this time, The US had a strict isolationist policy, which meant we refused to involve ourselves with foreign conflicts unless it had to do with us. Instead on focusing on foreign affairs, in the mid-1800's we concentrated more on the idea of Manifest Destiny.
