The detente refers to a phase of the Cold War during which the tension between the US and the USSR relaxed,but without a definite settlement. It took place during 1968 to 1979.
Detente, the easing of strained relationships between countries, began in1969. During this time the SALT treaty and the Helsinki accord was signed and the infamous red telephone was installed for quick discussions between Russia and the United States.
So many Americans lost their lives or were crippled in WWI. How is it possible for you to wonder if America's participation in all that pain and misery was GENUINE ?

Detente' is actually a form of peaceful coexistence. It was pursued by all the US presidents after the death of Stalin. Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev was a proponent of this policy as well.
