Vicksburg was important because it was the supply crossroads for the south. located on the Mississippi it was convenient to dropoff and pick up, supplies. It was also important to note that many supplies came thru Mexico. Taking vicks burg ended the war in the Mississippi region. Grant then was sent to lead the Northern forces thru the wilderness battles, since the North could not follow closely enough as the south exited Gettysburg to deliver a "knock out blow" lack of food and boots lead to the souths final surrender. too much gunpowder and bullets made it thru and no food.

Vicksburg was the last Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi.

By capturing this river-port, the Union would deny the Confederates the use of the river itself (a prime highway for troops and supplies) and isolate all Confederate units West of the river.

It would end the war in the West, and enable Grant to move East and help the Army of the Cumberland, besieged in Chattanooga.

If it took place somewhere else, it would have a different name. The siege took place at Vicksburg because of its strategic location. Its gun emplacements on the bluffs high above an extreme bend in the Mississippi River at that point, allowed Vicksburg to control all the boats traveling on that part of the river. They could destroy any river traffic, practically at will, allowing southern boats to pass and preventing union boats from doing so. The "Gibraltar of the South" controlled the supply communication lines. Once in Union hands, Grant could choke off reinforcements and materiel from reaching southern troops, and use the Mississippi Valley as a springboard for operations in other parts of the South, to say nothing of securing his own supply lines.

The Battle of Vicksburg happened because the union and confederacy needed a place to settle their differences and stop slavery. Ulysses S. Grant began the Battle of Vicksburg.
