The British, fighting their largest war in centuries, against Napoleon, began stopping American ships from trading in Europe, seizing whatever they decided was contraband, and taking American sailors who may or may not have deserted from the Royal Navy.

Back in the US, the "War Hawks" wanted war. A group of Congressmen from the south and west, they encouraged an invasion of Canada as a means to retaliate against Britain for the blockade.

The United States was also finding its westward expansion slowed by the Indian tribes living on the land, and the War Hawks believed the British were encouraging the resistance of the First Nations.
