Some Orthodox Jews did not approve of the modern nation of Israel, because it was created by humans via the United Nations. It was not directly created by God. Most Jews have no problem with the modern nation of Israel, and those Orthodox Jews are in the minority as far as most Jews are concerned.

The Zionist movement has always been in favor of creating a Jewish state in the land of Israel which was known as Palestine, that is the historic homeland of the Jewish people.

There was a period when Herzl (the father of Zionism), proposed East Africa as a temporary refuge for Jews that were in immediate danger from pogroms and Antisemitism of Eastern Europe. However this caused much protest and was rejected at the Seventh Zionist Congress in 1905.

The Balfour Declaration of 1917 was written to show Great Britain's support for?

The Balfour Declaration was the first promise by the British Empire to give the Jewish people a national home in Palestine. It was the first major success of the Zionist Movement and led to increased pressure by Jews to immigrate to the territory and set the foundations of a new Jewish State-to-be. As the Zionists worked to create a Jewish state, the support of one of the world's largest powers, that was soon to take over Palestine, was crucial. This also changed the future trajectory of Israel/Palestine as a region, allowing the seeds of Israel's creation to be sown.

Who started Zionism?

The Zionist leadership was ardently secularist with one or two critical exceptions. These leaders included Theodor Herzl (who developed the concept of Modern Jewish Nationalism or Zionism), Eliezer ben Yehuda (who developed the Modern Hebrew Language), Ze'ev Jabotinsky (Jewish Advocate to the British and Leader of the Palmach), Menachem Begin (Leader of the Irgun and future Israeli Prime Minister), and the Halutzim in general (the Jewish pioneers who arrived in the British Mandate of Palestine in the 1920s and 1930s). On the religious side, there was primarily Rabbi Avraham Kook (First Ashkenazic Chief Rabbi of Israel and founder of Religious Zionism) who was treading a new theological doctrine to back up Zionism with Jewish religious values.

There was no particular issue that caused Zionism as a movement. Theodor Herzl, the founder of the movement, was motivated quite strongly by the Dreyfus Affair in France. Other Zionists were motivated by other rationales or events. The worldwide (Non-Jewish) community finally embraced the Jewish Right to a State after the realization of how extensive the Holocaust was.

What did Zionism cause in Palestine?

Zionism created a national Jewish identity. It is ultimately responsible for the current existence of a Jewish State. Most Arabs choose to fault Zionism with every conceivable ill their societies carry with little to no evidence for these claims. Zionism is certainly one of the causes of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict, but it is not the only cause of the conflict and is also not the most important cause of the conflict.
