Because the Nile River gave them a water source. Also the desert provided protection because their enemies couldn't survive the journey through the desert without water and the Nile was the only water source by Egypt.

Greece has many deep harbors and ports, meaning it is easily accessible by ship. Many of the city-states had a strong economy because of trade. Therefore people would have moved to Greece to profit from the strong trade economy. However several of the city-states, most notably Athens, had strict citizenship laws so if foreigners moved there they would not have the benefits of citizenship.

They began in the Greek peninsula and as the cities became overpopulated they sent out surplus population to found new cities. This extended to a couple of thousand independent city-states around the Mediterranean and Black Seas, stretching from Spain through to Asia Minor and Crimea.

The countryside was a series of patches or fertile land divided by mountains, lakes, rivers and sea. When the Greek tribes arrived as nomads, they seized a patch of farmland, established a fortress in high land (acropolis) and developed cities, establishing independent city-states. Usually in dispute with each other, they had no reason or desire to amalgamate, and so remained independent.
