Because we're like that. More to the point, the ENGLISH are like that. I'm scottish and there's NO WAY we would have tried that, we can be quite an aggressive bunch. The English are much more polite and reserved.

Because Chamberlain, the Prime Minister, was under the impression that Hitler was a reasonable guy. As to why they threw him bones in the first place, many in Britain believed the Treaty of Versailles was an incredibly harsh treaty. As Hitler's aims revolved mostly around abolishing it, many were sympathetic to his cause. Why shouldn't they be united with their fellow Germans in Austria? Unfortunately, Hitler was too greedy to comprehend; each final demand would be followed by another and another.

Was appeasement a mistake in World War 2?

If you are referring to the appeasement of Hitler, it could be considered a mistake. However, neither the French and especially the British would not have gone to war over the Sudentland, so Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain had no choice. A war would not have been supported. Either way, Hitler would have taken the Sudentland, war or no war.

Why is appeasement important?

The idea of appeasing your enemy to keep him at arms length away from you is a good idea in theory to protect yourself. But, enemies do not always stay appeased. Appeasement does not really work if the enemy is not appeased as in the case of Adolf Hitler. He went against every nation that tried the appeasement tactic with him.

Did the appeasement policy work to deter German aggression?

Hardly, the blitzkreig hunger to conquer broke that tactic.
