There was always competition between the great European powers for land, wealth power and status. Additional overseas territories provided these. So there was an international 'landgrab'. The French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese and Germans got some but Britain had the best Navy and got the most. Much of it was got by taking it from one of the others, like Manhattan from the Dutch, Canada from the French or Florida from the Spanish. But India and Africa were the great prizes because of their riches (jewels, ivory, slaves) and Britain gained almost total control of both, in these cases thanks to the Army, whose weapons outclassed those of the locals. But they had to fight for them.
