Best Answer

Zanzibar is a small island off of the coast of Kenya. It was an important base for European trade and exploration, so they could easily get to the African mainland. By the 1870's Europe was craving African products (including ivory, spices, etc), and competition between the European powers to annex the continent was growing. So, in 1887 the Imperial British East Africa Company took control of a small strip of the Kenyan coast. In 1895 the land was taken over by the Britsh Government and became a protectorate. In 1902 the East African Protectorate was extended to today's borders.
