Firstly, because the Portuguese experts considered Columbus' estimate of the distance to India by the western route as way too low (they were right) and secondly, because their own exporer Batholomeu Dias had come back with results and reports which indicated that reaching India by the eastern route was at hand (which also turned out to be correct). Moreover, Columbus had made extravagant demands to the Portuguese king in terms of future power and share of future revenues.
Because experts in geography in the court of John II of Portugal concluded (correctly) that the distance between the west edge of Europe and the east edge of Asia was too far for a trans-oceanic voyage.
The portugues rejected Columbus bc the King thought that Columbus' estimate of the length of the journey was way too small
They refused to supply him with ships until he convinced them that the voyage had promise of being a good investment (originally expected to be in trade with the Orient).

In 1485, Columbus presented his plans to John II, King of Portugal. He proposed the king equip three sturdy ships and grant Columbus one year's time to sail out into the Atlantic, search for a western route to the Orient, and return. Columbus also requested he be made "Great Admiral of the Ocean", appointed governor of any and all lands he discovered, and given one-tenth of all revenue from those lands. The king submitted the proposal to his experts, who rejected it. It was their considered opinion that Columbus's estimation of a travel distance of 2,400 miles (3,860 km) was, in fact, far too short.
First of all, the commitee appointed by the King to study Columbus' proposal discovered that Columbus was grossly miscalculating and underestimating the distance to China: the geographic location on the globe of China was well-known to the Portuguese through their earlier travels by the eastward route. So it advised the King not to go along with Columbus' plans. Columbus himself had asked for 10% of everything that was to come out of his discoveries, which also did not sit well with the King. Finally, word had come in to the King that the eastern route had in the meantime been discovered to be feasible. The King then was no longer interested in trying a western route.

Some associations of history enthusiasts are trying to build ships as it was done in the 18th century. The only thing to do to learn how ships were built at this time is to look at the historic records and historical books. its not the only thing you can do, i am currently looking for model boat plans to build a supertanker, whilst searching all the websites that Google gave me i have come across alot of the plans and information about ships from the Tim period you are interested in, i would suggest typing into a search engine......... model ship plans or historic model ship plans, just add in your key words which in this case would be (how to build) and add words like blue prints or plans, you will find that alot of the plans you can download are for models but are set out exactly as they would have when they were building ships at that time in history, and even if the plans are not what you are after you can get alot of information from the model boat building sites plus they will give you plenty of links to historic ship building sites. i hope this helps good luck.
with whose plans did the radical republicans disagree
Columbus wanted to sail west around the world to reach the Indies.

After the death of Christopher Columbus' wife, Felipa Perestrelo e Monis, he decided to devote himself completely to topics in regards to discovery. He learned about St. Brandan who had adventures in the Atlantic and the island of Antilia. He also heart reports of men who ventured west of Madeira and the Azores of land as well as the works of authors who had theories of the distance from eastern Asia to western Europe. This encouraged him to develop his plans and later get his sponsorship from Ferdinand of Aragon and Isabella of Castille.
There are currently no plans to make Eldest into a movie
Columbus reached the Americas only to find that some of the natives inhabiting it practiced cannibalism. They were savage people who could not be reasoned with and there was no way Columbus could have explained his visions and plans to them so he had to order his men to finish off most of them.
