It is easy to understand why the people of the United States voted Democratic in 1830's. Their candidate was Andrew Jackson a national hero because of the Battle of New Orleans. The LDS Church was formed in 1830 during Jackson's first term as president and he continued as President until 1837 when Martin Van Buren became President. Van Buren was Jackson's Vice President.
1825-1829: The Presidential election of 1824 was a disaster. There was only one party to choose from and that was the combined Democratic-Republican party. Although Andrew Jackson had the popular vote and the Electorial votes were split 4 ways the House of Representatives choose the President and John Quincy Adams became president.
1829-1837: The Presidential election of 1829 was not much better. Andrew Jackson choose Martin Van Buren as his Vice Presidential running mate, together they formed the Democrat Party and easily defeated Adams in the election. During his political career Adams was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican,National Republican, and later Anti-Masonicand Whig parties.
1837-1841: The Presidential election of 1838 pitted Martin Van Buren against the 3 Whig party candidates. When the election of 1836 came up, Jackson was determined to make Van Buren, his personal choice, President to continue his legacy. Martin Van Buren's only competitors in the 1836 election were the Whigs, who ran several regional candidates in hopes of sending the election to the House of Representatives, where each state delegation would have one vote. The three candidates were William Henry Harrison who hoped to receive the support of the Western voters, Daniel Webster had strength in New England, and Hugh Lawson White had support in the South. The Whig Party's strategy didn't work and Van Buren was elected.
