They did not plan ahead, nor did they have a decent amount of supplies with them. Also, most settlers brought there were of nobility, and refused to work.

They searched for gold the whole time and did not plant food to replenish their supplies.

Jamestown settlers were originally in Jamestown, with help of the Virginia Company, in hopes of finding riches as fast as possible then return home to Europe, so they did not form any sort of housing nor did anyone produce food for their survival.
