It was an easier way for the VC to get around. With the US Army above ground trying to 'search and destroy' them it was a safe way to travel. With the Americans also having the upper hand with their firepower, the Vietcong could confuse the soldiers. For example, they would ambush an American soldiers camp, then when the troops went after them in pursuit, they would just disappear. This was one of the many ways that the Vietcong wore down the morale of the US troops.

Sometimes, sometimes not. Like all dead fighting men thru-out history (including the Indian Wars in the American west in the 1600s, 1700s, and 1800s) the deceased were often buried on site or within a few hundred yards of the killing. Part of the reason for burying was to prevent "their" enemy from capitalizing on the deceased man; they didn't want him stripped out, trophied (scalped or otherwise souvenired), and most important of all they didn't want their enemy to know that they had succeeded in killing some of their enemies (they didn't want their opponent to get credit for the body count).

A wounded VC could be dragged into a tunnel for medical treatment then could've died later.

There are two answers for this question. But first an explanation for the tunnels.

In war against aircraft there are two types of defenses:

1. Active air defense.

2. Passive air defense.

Active defense is actually shooting at the enemy aircraft. Passive defense is hiding from them (camoflage). Tunnels provided BOTH! Thus, tunnels in Vietnam provided cover & concealment for communist troop movements and resupply during the war.

Second portion of the answer: There were tunnels everywhere in South Vietnam (probably North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia as well). The tunnels at Cu Chi was the AO of the USAs Americal Division (Oregon Task Force Division aka 23rd Inf Div) and were amongst the largest networks because they were along the coastline and nearer the DMZ/I Corps...and the closer you got to I Corps the closer you were to the NVA's supply lines...which meant the NVA were always better armed and fresher nearer their homeland than they were when they were stretched to far down south. AND Cu Chi is more readily available for TOURISTs being nearer the coastline and other major cities (Hue, Quang Tri, Dong Ha, Da Nang, Phu Bai, etc.). The former North Vietnamese government doesn't allow tourists to visit the former "hot" battlegrounds such as Lang Vei, the Rockpile, possibly Khe Sanh (which might be a soybean farm today according to television programs), the Ia Drang, etc. Bottom line: there are other tunnel networks out there but Cu Chi is safer & more readily available to tourists.

When was the vietcong tunnel system built?

Well The tunnel system has been around for ages, but the VC tunnels where special They had kitchens, wells, beds, ammo rooms, they even had an air raid shelter. They would put punji traps (Sharp bamboo traps that would kill you and some times the if you survived they would leave you left for dead, the bamboo would grow right through your body) around there tunnels. But the VC started making tunnels around the 1940's i took about 25 years to build all the tunnels

Gophers dig tunnels with their front claws and teeth, while kicking the loose soil back with their hind feet. The gophers use this soil to plug their tunnels and keep predators out.

What military stratagies did the vietcong use against the Americans?

The Vietcong had planned for the war years in advance. First, they prepared their supply lines. They built the Ho Chi Minh Trail. It was not one road but a series of extremely narrow roads that merged and separated. The bridges were built underwater so they were not visible from the air. Thus they had simple supply lines with lots of built in redundancy. Second, they dug out caves to hide their solders. Thus their solders would hide during the day and come out during the night to fight. The caves also held their supplies and hospitals. Third, the Vietcong used extremely simple weapons. The AK-47 rifle is designed so that it will not jam. Thus a Vietcong could get mud all over his rifle and it would still work. It was not a fine crafted piece of machinery like the American weapons. Fourth, the Vietcong used weapons that took bullets and other ammunition one millimeter larger than American weapons. Thus, if the Vietcong captured American ammunition, they could use it. If the Americans captured Vietcong ammunition, it was worthless. Fifth, the Vietcong would kill the money lenders. In Asian societies many people owe money at a high rate of interest. The Vietcong would break that cycle. They would show the local people how they would deliver them from their oppression. Sixth, the Vietcong listened to American Generals talk. One American general said, "The Vietcong anti aircraft guns can not go over 6,000 feet. We will be safe if we fly at 10,000 feet. The Vietcong knew American airplanes would fly at 10,000 feet. They put their anti-aircraft guns on top of 6,000 feet high mountains. The guns would reach 12,000 feet. When a plane flew over at 10,000 feet, they would shoot it down.
