Also, after many Indian nations were decimated by white man's diseases, some probably captured female settlers in an attempt to keep their nation alive through intermarriage.

Selfishness. They wanted a better life for their families. And wanted the best land to harvest and farm. With no thought or care if it took land away from the Indians. The wide belief among White settlers were that Indians were savages. By taking away (killing) their resources, such as Buffalo, it would keep the Indians away.
