To keep out west Germans and to keep east Germans from escaping communism
At the end of WW2 Berlin was divided into 4 sectors. One controlled by the Russians and 3 controlled by the west. These became East Germany and West Germany. The Russians didn't want the people from their sector to cross over into the western sector. After all, the Eastern was communist and the western sector was a democracy, so they built the wall to keep people IN East Germany. They put up guard towers, barb wire, had a no man's land, moved people out of buildings near the wall, and had armed patrols. This didn't stop people from trying to escape, so they dug tunnels, tried to hide in cars or trucks crossing the border, and did what they could to get to freedom. People died doing this. The Brandenburg Gate was the official crossing point and on the western side there were American troops and others. It always seemed that if a war was going to start this would be one of the hot points for it to happen. The Berlin Wall became the symbol of the Cold War and stayed that way until 1989 when it came down and Germany unified again.
Is this a joke? But anyway, its the Berlin Wall.
The Berlin wall was once used to divide Berlin. It was built by the German Democratic Republic, frequently called East Germany. The wall was torn down in 1990.
