The WPV or IPV (shot) for polio was invented in 1954. Jonas Salk was the lucky person to invent the vaccine for this horrible disease. If you do not know what polio is here is a summary: What is Polio?

Polio is a horrible disease that makes you become paralyzed. The 3 kinds of polio are: Bulbar, Spinal, and Respiratory. Respiratory: Can't breathe as well. Which you usually go into the iron lung. Spinal: You get paralyzed from neck down. Bulbar: Can't swallow or talk. That's is when you could choke.

To prevent these problems, the chickenpox vaccine was developed:

  • Varicella pneumonia- Pneumonia can develop if the chickenpox virus travels to your lungs.
  • Acute cerebella ataxia- Virus affects the brain. Although rare, this complication is most likely to affect older children with chickenpox.
  • Encephalitis (inflammation of brain)
  • Meningitis (inflammation of tissue around spinal cord)
  • Vision loss. Chickenpox virus that spreads into the clear eye covering (cornea) can leave scars that can cause vision loss.
  • Arthritis (swelling of joints)
  • Death. Before introduction of the chickenpox vaccine in the United States in 1995, about 100 people died each year from chickenpox.
  • Newborns exposed to chickenpox had a high risk of death.
  • Exposure in the uterus to a baby, can cause birth defects.
