I'm assuming you are talking about nomadic tribes. Often, they traveled where the source of food went. For instance, if we are talking about the time of the Ice Age, tribes would go wherever the mammoths went to ensure that they had food. Or, if they ate plants and herbs, later in history they went to places that crops would thrive in that particular season. (Some plants grow better at different times of year in different locations.) Basically, these types of tribes wouldn't settle in a place for too long, because they most likely were following the food during migration seasons.

What did a horse represent to native Americans?

At first, horses were viewed as prey. They were hunted for their meat. Then Native Americans discovered that horses could be used for transportation. They trained horses to ride for aid in hunting, raiding other tribes, and going to war. Using horses made it much easier for them to travel quickly. Having horses also allowed tribes to be more mobile so that they could follow the herds of animals that they hunted (buffalo). The horses were able to carry most of their things so that they could travel faster.
