On 17 July 1918, he and his entire family, as well as some of their servants, were taken to the cellar, where they were executed by a detachment of Bolsheviks led by Yakov Yurovsky. At first, the bodies were disposed of down a mine-shaft. Later, Yurovsky removed the bodies and buried most of them in a sealed and concealed pit, where they remained until geologists located them in the 1970s. The remains were exhumed and formally identified in the 1990s.
