there was a "white Australian policy" put in place in 1901,

it was one of the first things Australia did when they first federated in Jan 1st 1901.

They also put in an Immigration restriction act, which only allowed Britain people in Australia and other people who weren't British were forced to do a test to be allow to come into Australia

i guess it slowly degraded, because in 1930's we went through the bust in the economy, and so we wanted more people to come into Australia but only British people, however British people were also suffering, so we started letting other European people into our country, such as Italian's German's etc.

as the year went by, we slowly relaxed, and become multicultural like we are today

The white Australia policy involved banning immigration of non-white people to Australia. The reasons for this and many people wrongly think were for rascist means. However, this is just untrue the reasons for this were because our founding fathers back in 1901 realized that immigration of non-white people would work for far less at a slave level in trade to live in a free country. If they worked at slave levels, the Australian people would be forced to compete with the new immigrants which would drive their standard of living down.

A similar thing happened back in the 1850s during the Gold Rush where Chinese people became a source of cheap labour and the Australian diggers were out of a job which led to anti-Chinese movements which contributed to shaping the policy made in 1901.

There was international pressure to allow people of non European backgrounds to enter Australia.

The change was slow, there was no significant "end date" for the white australia policy because the policy changed through time.

The White Australia Policy was a racially-motivated response to the concerns of Australian workers that their jobs and livelihood were going to the Chinese and other non-white immigrants.

Although introduced by legislation at Federation, the policy was a legacy dating back to goldrush times. There was lingering resentment over the Chinese who had come during the gold rush, made their fortune (as they were far more industrious than Australians) and then returned to their own country, taking their fortune with them. Some stayed and set up businesses in towns, but they were always looked down upon.

It was hoped by some (not all) that a White Australia policy would ensure employment for Australians. Some colonies were opposed to this policy as they used foreign labour, which was often much cheaper than local labour. An example of this is Queensland, which employed Kanakas (people from the Cook Islands). Under the new constitution, not only the Kanakas, but also the much-feared Chinese, who came to Australia during the gold rush, would not be allowed into Australia. Thus, there was a push for Federation (which eventually happened in 1901) which would eliminate unwanted foreigners, providing more employment for Australians.
