Europeans began exploring further and further afield, and the first visits of white people to Australia were the result of their natural inclination to explore, seeking more trade opportunities. Many of them found themselves on Australia's shores quite by accident, having been blown off-course, or accidentally shipwrecked on reefs, and needing to repair their vessels. None of these early group of mainly Dutch explorers sought to colonise the continent, and the first English explorer - William Dampier - gave a particularly unfavourable view of the western landscape and its native inhabitants.

It was not until James Cook charted the eastern coast of Australia that the continent's potential was seen. Following his favourable report, which was endorsed by respected botanist Sir Joseph Banks, England chose to colonise Australia for several reasons:

  • To expand the British empire, and prevent the French from gaining a foothold in the Australian continent or in that part of the Pacific.
  • To solve the problem of Britain's overcrowded prisons (a consequence of the Industrial Revolution) by establishing a new penal colony in a land which showed promise for eventually becoming self-supporting. Britain had been sending their excess prisoners to North America, but the American War of Independence put a stop to the practice. Following this, the English were no longer able to transport surplus prisoners who couldn't legally be executed to North America.
  • To exploit the Natural Resources and development of the continent for England's own commercial and political gains to Britain.
  • Due to war, Britain needed to find an alternative supply of Flax and timber as her Baltic supply was under threat. It was believed that nearby Norfolk Island would provide this.
  • Britain needed a port in the East to promote trade with China and to extend its naval and commercial power.

How did life change in Australia during the white Australia policy?

well... people who were 'not white' could not enter australia. even those who were in Australia at the present got treated differently than to the pure 'white' Australians. Non-white people weren't allowed in pubs, schools, down town, to the movies, beaches etc... Their life was cut short. They were treated differently than to the 'white people.' it was a hard life for them. ("aboriginals")
