It because the people in the olden days didn't now how to make their life better so they put up with the one they has and that was from the olden days so they didn't have the technogy to make life easier as it is today
Workhouses closed down because they were very harsh and hostile places. They were designed to look like prisons; the people who had to go there were treated very unfairly.
I don't know I think in the 1920's probably or 1930's I think.
