It was very difficult to change identities in Europe then, as it is now. European nations had/have very detailed records of a person's place of birth, residence, movements, etc. For instance if you wanted to move from one village/town or city to another, then you had to complete an application form for permission (often still required today). Records were kept of your new location. German authorities (and other local authorities) could readily verify the accuracy of your identification. Europeans were often required to carry their identification with them when away from their home town. Even before the genocide began, German Jews were required to identify themselves with the Jewish star on the outside of their clothes. Opportunities to falsify identities were increased as more cities were destroyed (with their records) and refugees were on the move. However, by this time, most of the Jewish population had been identified and collected.
