the french fought with the Americans against the british in the American revolution. the french supplied the Americans with supplies, and foods. also, the french fought in the battle of saratoga and the Yorktown peninsula. another attribute that influenced American was the statue of liberty. another one was that the Americans named their the fries after the french, as French Fries and french toast!
Potato chips were invented because of a persnickety customer at a restaurant in Saratoga Springs, New York. This cranky custiner refused an order of French fries because the potatoes were too thick. Chef George Crum made thinner fries, but the customer was still not satisfied. Finally, in disgust, the chef cut the potato into paper-thin slices and fried them to a crisp. He thought this would teach the customer a good lesson. Instead, the customer loved these potato "chips." The word spread, and pretty soon, many customers were asking for the hard, thin chips.
Americans usually call a house "a house", sometimes "real estate".
They call it cream too.
We call them chips because there basically chips of a potato. Similarly what you call chips or potato chips we call crisps because you fry them to a crisp... If anything you Americans should call your "fries" chips because they are chips and your "potato chips" crisps because there fried to a crisp! +++ Also [French] Fries are usually cut thinner than British chips, so are not quite the same thing.
Fish and chips ... really is fish and chips. The fish is usually cod/haddock in batter or breadcrumbs. Chips are (what Americans call) fries.
Don't diss it until you've tried it. :P But I think you may be misunderstanding it. In England, what Americans call chips are called crisps. The thing we have with fish? That's what Americans call fries. So having "Fish and Chips" is a bit like having Steak and Fries. But with fish.
Fries Yumm
They are called French fries because "to french something" is to cut it into thin slices. The French themselves don't call their fries "French".
We call them 'chips' in other countries they are known as 'fries' or 'French fries' the confusion arises in America, American 'chips' are what the British call 'crisps' a very thin slice of potato deep fried until crisp and golden.
Chips.
The British call "french fries" "Chips".
They use the word chips when Americans say French fries (potatoes).
Chips
They're called Crisps. I agree i went to France and the chips were called crips because my brother went France on school trip and he asked for crisps and they have him chips! +++ There's also a slight difference in that British potato-chips are cut thicker than French Fries, and their surfaces are not fried to crispness so the inner should be tender but still firm. The version sold by MacDonalds, in the UK at least, is very thin and crispy to hard. For some perverse reason at least one UK-based crisp manufacturer has been labelling its packets sold in the UK "Potato Chips" (in the US sense) for a few years.
"French fries" is an Americanism, and no one knows who first used the term. In Britain they are called chips. What the British call crisps are called potato chips by the Americans. The French call French fries pommes de frits, i.e. fried potatoes.
