I think the reasoning is that if there were no illegals, then wages would not be depressed. It implies that citizens would be willing to pick fruit, do gardening, construction, etc... IF those jobs paid decent wages. But since there are millions of illegals willing to do those jobs, for low wages (but far more than they could earn in their home countries) the industries/employers that use them have no incentive to raise wages as there is an endless supply of labor.

SInce London is close to the South East of England - it has a higher mixture of foreign cultures and peoples than most other places ! If you want stricter immigration laws... petition your local MP to do more to make it easier to return illegal immigrants to their country of origin !
