It is a sense of humour that a lot Americans can't understand, British make fun of their friends, other people, themselves, anything really. Just because we find it funny.Also, British humour is, or can be, quite sophisticated wheras American humour is often slapstick, with people or animals being hurt (even if only make-believe or Cartoons). That's not to say the British don't resort to slapstick- Benny Hill being a classic example, but Benny at least managed some really funny "double meaning" skits.
