India was once part of the British Empire, and before that traded extensively with British merchants. Since they met many more Britons than Americans, that is the variety they learnt.
It is important to note that there is difference between American English and British English. In order to sound British, one must adopt British English for example; Stress upon 'A' or use the word flat instead of apartment.
Each country that uses English uses its own version. Australians use Australian English, South Africans use South African, in India they use Indian English. There is no strict distinction between British English and American English. In fact the language of Edinburgh is different from the language of Cardiff, and the language of Boston different from the language of Las Vegas.
British English
British English is not a single dialect.
Canadian English is a mixture of both American English and British English. Some words Canadians spell as the British do; i.e. 'colour', but others they do not.

The British believed that English literature was more valuable than literature in antiquity. They believed it was paramount to teach Indians English because their dialects were rude, poor and needed to be enriched. Thomas Macauley believed that once the Indians were taught English literature, they could be used as interpreters between the uneducated masses and the British.
The main cause was that British were continously draining the wealth of India. Indians were slowly realising the need for independence. The English were very very cruel with Indians. After the death of some freedom fighters the Indians were in anger and they start threatning the british. After some time british had to leave the country.
India was ruled by the Brits for many decades. Business is conducted in English and higher education uses English in India. Many people there use it as their primary language and the native languages are secondary for them. You will notice that the English the Indians use sounds very British or Queen's English style. All international business in India is conducted in English too.
