Short answer: they don't. LDS Charities is the one of the largest religious aid organizations in the world, and donates far more than any organization you can name. Search out any major disaster and you'll see the LDS charity organizations as one of the first, and often the most prominent, relief organizations there. The Mormon church not only does not own any "lakes" or "resorts," but spends 100% of its income each year on maintenance of the organization (0% on salaries). It may surprise you to know that the LDS church is that only religion that doesn't have any paid clergy; meaning while there are 150 nice temples around the world (basically cathedrals), the churches are simplistic, and both the temples and the churches are entirely run by volunteers.
