The Islamic view of suicide The general view of Muslim scholars is that suicide is totally detestable and forbidden in the Islamic faith, regardless of the reason. Muslim Scholars belonging to both the Sunni and Shiite sects share the view that a person who commits suicide is committing an act of apostasy. Islamic history also proves that no influential Muslim had ever committed suicide. The founders of Islam including prophet Muhammad and his companions opposed suicide. Suicide bombers in the 21st century Today militant groups across the world from Sri Lanka to Somalia and Iraq feel powerless against their enemies. These militants have resorted to using suicide bombings to draw attention to themselves and to destroy their enemies. These bombers include people from Muslim, Hindu and Christian faiths The large majority of suicide bombers however, happen to be Muslims. This does not mean that suicide bombing is accepted or promoted in Islam. The perpetrators of these acts are simply people who are trying to rid their lands of invaders and occupiers. Their reasoning has caused them to think that since the occupiers of their land is going to kill them or destroy their quality of life, they might as well commit suicide bombing and kill a few of their enemies before they die. This view, although sympathetic, has not been condoned by Muslim scholars. In 2005, the Deoband council of Muslim theologians, whose rulings influence Muslims in the Asian region, strongly condemned suicide bombers and terrorists who act out in the name of Islam. The council of Muslim theologians from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia whose rulings influence North Africa and the Middle East also condemned such acts and continues to condemn it. Reasons for suicide bombings despite it being forbidden in Islam As mentioned above, many people's individual reasoning causes them to go through depression and various emotions and psychological changes occur to them when they live under constant threat. This causes many of the suicide bombings being reported. Remember that legally and Islamically, that does not suffice as a justification for suicide although it is explained psychologically. Another reason why people resort to suicide is because they are approached by militant groups who work in the area. These groups offer to support their families like their wives and children on condition that the man suicide bombs himself. This occurs among Muslims and Hindus in the Middle East and Sri Lanka regions. Again this is not a justification legally nor Islamically for suicide bombing. Conclusion From here it an be deduced that the Islamic faith does not condone nor promote suicide, but rather condemns it. Suicide is a terrorist act committed by members of terrorist groups or people who have links to such groups. Some people resort to this act when overcome by depression. Even though it may be committed in the name of Islam by the perpetrator, it is forbidden in the Islamic faith.
