Actually, all the major religions teach that we should love others, be compassionate, help the poor, and care for those who are in need. In fact, nearly every religion, Islam included, has a version of the Golden Rule-- to treat others as we ourselves would like to be treated. Sadly, some people forget those teachings and become greedy or arrogant; and others become extreme in their views, such that they no longer love anyone who disagrees with them. These sorts of people give Islam (or any other religion) a bad name, by claiming they are religious while acting in a way that contradicts the ethical teachings of their faith.
The following lines may be added to the above answer that is almost comprehensive in itself. As per teachings and faith of Islam, Almighty God (Allah in Arabic) created all humans from ONE couple-Hazrat Adam (AS) and Hazrat Eve (AS). As a result, all human beings are bretheren, bound to love one another. Sometimes we forget this fact and start hating others without any justification.
