God sent books (revelations) to the people pf those two religions as He revealed the Torah (Old Testament) to the Jews through prophet Musa (Moses) and He revealed The Bible (new testament) to the Christians through prophet ESa (Jesus) - peace be upon them all - and that's something they have in common with Muslims who received the last and final revelation from God to mankind - the Quran that was revealed by God to prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him).

Christians are the followers of Christianity per God revelation of the Bible to Prophet Jesus (Isa in Arabic) and the Jews are the followers of Judaism per God revelation of Torah to Prophet Moses (Musa in Arabic). Muslims are the followers of Islam per God revelation of Quran to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon them all).
Since Muslims believe in all God holy books including Torah, the Bible, and the Quran and believe in all God prophets including Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad (PBU them), they call the followers of Moses and Jesus (the Jews and the Christians respectively) people of the book. This means followers of the holy book Torah and followers of the holy book the Bible.

∙ 8y agoWhen Muslims spread out from southern Arabia, they forcibly converted pagans to Islam, because the Islamic view was the paganism was inherently wrong. However, Jews and Christians read the Bible, the 'Book', so the Islamic view was that their religions were true but incomplete, since they had not accepted the revelations of Muhammad. People of the Book, Jews and Christians, were allowed to continue in their religion unhindered, subject to payment of a swingeing poll tax. Of course, many Jews and Christians converted merely to escape the hated tax and the many humiliations some rulers heaped on them.
At first, the Persians were treated much like pagans and strenuous efforts were made to convert them. However, with Persian autonomy came tolerance for Zoroastrianism, and Zoroastrians were eventually accepted as People of the Book, although by then a minority in their country.
