It is not known how the popularity of the meat pie in Australia originated. However, the first significant mention of meat pies was in the Melbourne newspaper, the "Argus", in 1850, when it was noted that the local Councillors preferred to purchase a meat pie from the nearby pub than to dine at Council Chambers. The popularity of the Australian meat pie could also be attributed to when baker L.T. McLure started baking his now famous of "Four'n'twenty" pies in Bendigo, in 1847. The pies quickly became popular, and production increased from 50 pies a day to over 50,000 an hour. The meat pie is easily handled, which makes it popular at sporting events, and as we know, many Australians love their sports. It should be noted that meat pies are still very popular in the UK as well.
