Providing adequate scratching posts, or even activity trees with multiple scratching posts will usually stop a cat from scratching furniture, as many will naturally prefer posts to furniture.
Kittens do this to the teats of their mother to stimulate milk production. When an adult cat does it, it's pure self soothing. It causes a release of endorphines, much the same as as a nice massage would in a human.
It tends to be kittens that claw your furniture. There is no evidence that certifies this yet, you hear rumors that they doo, like swinging on your curtains! The kittens tend to do that, as they don't know any better. Get them scratching posts, then they will claw that. Make sure they know they only use that, train them
Hope that helps Sort of :) x <33

they also do it to sharpen the claws

There is a type of spray you can purchase from pet stores to spray on the furniture to deter them. You can also clip your cat's nails, since they claw things to file them down, if you do it for them they won't claw.
