Cats are built to be predators, and stalking prey takes a lot of energy. They’re programmed to recharge from all that taxing hunting with generous nap schedules—they can sleep up to 20 hours per day, depending on factors like age, disposition, and even the weather.

That can seem like a lot to us, especially because much of that sleep happens during the day. Although house cats are not strictly nocturnal, they are crepuscular, meaning they’re most active during dawn and dusk. Those twilight waking hours can seep into the wee hours of the morning, which explains why cats have been known to be most annoying at 4 a.m.

Long story short, cats sleep a lot during the day because they expend a lot of energy during dawn and dusk.

On average cats sleep about 13-18 hours a day! They do this to conserve energy.

I'm just adding, cats are crepuscular (most active at dawn and dusk). They may not seem it, like other animals, but they are

Because cats and even kittens have to sleep just like you! They need at least 10 hours of sleep or they'll be droopy and ill. If you get a bed with a hood on it and put a blanket in it they will be warm and it will keep drafts out. Often you will have to put your cat in it or he or she will not know its his or hers. Try not to put cat nip in a acts bed because they will think yay its play time. Feed your cat at least 2 meals a day! Get he or she to get use to one schedule for food and one type of food to get he or she used to. For more facts email me at Yahoo.

Most mammals without hooves sleep the majority of the day (lions, bears, pigs, etc.). Unless actively hunting, these mammals have no need to expend energy--which is a good survival strategy in situations where food is scarce. Modern cats and dogs obviously have plenty of food, but they still conserve their energy when they can.

Because they are so extraordinarily stupid, they have to rest their pea sized brains a while before they urinate around the homes of their equally moronic owners, who have become so accustomed to the odor, that they do not realize why they never have friends or family visit.

But, cats are also sociable and highly adaptable. This means that a cat is apt to adjust his sleeping habits so he can spend more time with his loved ones -- meaning you. Cats will also adjust their sleep patterns to their feeding schedules, which is why an indoor cat sleeps more than a cat that roams outdoors.

Cats are nocturnal, or they are awake at night. (Usually.) So they sleep during the day and hunt or play at night.

Instinct. Cats are naturally nocturnal animals, so they sleep during the day. Their instinct also tells them to save their energy for hunting.
