Because they don't get a balanced diet of bugs, grain, bread and water. But don't over feed them, or it'll be the complete opposite, they'll get constipation and wont be able to defectate easily.

Since I don't know anything about the chicken's diet, it would be hard to state the reason for the constipation. You can help with the constipation by giving the chicken olive oil and apple cider vinegar to aid with digestion and bowel movement.

It can also be placed in warm water, which has helped one of my baby chicks. If it gets better, I suggest you make sure the bird eats well for a while afterwards.

We're talking the green stuff, proteins, and fibers: eggs cooked in olive oil, weeds/grass, seeds, meat and nuts maybe, good whole grain like oats and wheat, not just corn and chicken scratch. Mixing some more ACV into its food regularly may help reduce the chances of the constipation reoccurring.
