They indicate what are called non-breaking spaces. When you want to keep two words always together on the same line, like Microsoft Word or Mcrosoft Corporation, you can put in a non-breaking space. Then when one of the words reaches the end of the line, it won't wrap onto the next line by itself, and so both words are always on one line. If you turn off the hidden characters, you will not see the degrees symbol. They do not print either. You would also sometimes see the degrees symbols when you have taken text from the internet and pasted it into a Word document.
It is because the advanced features of Word are not displayed there. Google Docs is what they use to show it. Docs has not updated what is there in word.
